Local History information re Washpool
Hello - I wonder if any experts on Horsley local history can help with my enquiry. I'm researching my Gloucestershire family history and have, I think, found an ancestor living in Washpool in the 1841 Census. I've visited the area and although Washpool is just a few hundred yards from Horsley town, it's a different world! Does anyone have any details of its history and development?
My ancestor was Sarah WILKINS - the 1841 Census notes her as being aged 50 and a "School (2nd word unclear - probably Teacher?)".
Is there any surviving record of staff at the local school, which presumably was in Horsley proper then?
And by the 1851 Census she and most of her family had moved to Southampton. This seems strange - Gloucester or Bristol would presumably have been easier choices if they just wanted to live in a larger town/city. Did Southampton have any special link to Horsley in those days?
Any advice and local expertise most welcome!
